Silver compounds

Silver chemistry runs through analytical, synthetic and materials laboratories in a way no other precious metal's does. Silver nitrate is the titrant for chloride and the reagent behind Tollens' test, chemical silvering and most silver nanoparticle syntheses. Silver oxide and silver carbonate are the mild, insoluble bases and one-electron oxidants that organic chemists reach for when a reaction must run without hydroxide, in glycosylation, N-heterocyclic carbene transfer, anion exchange and palladium-catalysed C–H activation. Silver acetate carries the same silver(I) with a carboxylate that participates directly in concerted metalation–deprotonation. Silver sulfate is the catalyst in the standard dichromate COD method. Silver chloride is the electrode material of every Ag/AgCl reference, and fine silver powder is the conductive phase in printed electronics and sintered joints.

Silver oxide

Ag2O · CAS 20667-12-3

Silver(I) oxide is a dark brown-black, light-sensitive powder used as a mild oxidant and base in organic synthesis: Koenigs–Knorr glycosylation, O-alkylation of sensitive substrates, oxidation of aldehydes to carboxylic acids, and the preparation of silver carboxylates and silver N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) transfer agents. It is the cathode material of silver-oxide button cells, a precursor for silver catalysts and conductive silver films, and a yellow colourant for glass and ceramic glazes. Decomposes cleanly to silver and oxygen above about 280 °C. Each lot is assayed for silver and released with a certificate of analysis.

Silver carbonate

Ag2CO3 · CAS 534-16-7

Silver carbonate is a pale yellow, light-sensitive powder used as a stoichiometric base and halide scavenger in palladium-catalysed C–H activation and cross-coupling, as the promoter in Koenigs–Knorr glycosylation, and, supported on Celite as Fétizon's reagent, for the selective oxidation of primary and secondary alcohols to aldehydes and ketones. It is also a convenient precursor for silver catalysts and silver(I) complexes. Approximately 78% silver by mass; every lot is assayed and released with a certificate of analysis.

Silver64.6% Ag

Silver acetate

AgOAc · CAS 563-63-3

Silver acetate is a white to grey-white crystalline solid, moderately soluble in water, used as a soluble silver source and mild oxidant in organic synthesis: decarboxylative and oxidative couplings, acetoxylation, silver-catalysed cycloadditions of azomethine ylides, halide abstraction from metal complexes and the preparation of silver(I) N-heterocyclic carbene complexes. It is also the silver precursor in reactive silver inks and antimicrobial coatings. Approximately 64.6% silver by mass; supplied with a lot-specific assay and certificate of analysis.

Silver sulfate

Ag2SO4 · CAS 10294-26-5

Silver sulfate is a white, light-sensitive crystalline solid used chiefly in analytical chemistry, as the catalyst in dichromate chemical oxygen demand (COD) determinations and to precipitate interfering chloride, and as a silver source for cyanide-free silver plating baths and for halide abstraction in synthesis. Approximately 69.2% silver by mass; each lot is assayed and ships with a certificate of analysis.

Silver chloride

AgCl · CAS 7783-90-6

Silver chloride is a white, water-insoluble, photosensitive solid that darkens on exposure to light. It is the active layer of Ag/AgCl reference electrodes and pH and ion-selective reference systems, a light-sensitive component of photographic emulsions and photochromic glass, an infrared-transmitting window material, and an antimicrobial agent in coatings and textiles. Approximately 75.3% silver by mass; supplied as a free-flowing powder with lot-specific assay.

About our silver compounds

Liffey Chemicals makes all seven in Dublin from silver refined by Liffey Metals. Each production batch is a numbered lot: we assay the silver content, check purity against the specification and record appearance before release, and the results travel with the goods as a certificate of analysis that can also be retrieved by lot number. Silver nitrate and silver sulfate are made to ACS reagent specification; the others are ≥99.9% on a metals basis.

Which salt you need usually follows from the solvent. For anything in water, start with the nitrate. For a base or oxidant that stays out of solution in organic solvents, choose the oxide or carbonate; for the acetate's carboxylate assistance in C–H activation, the acetate. The sulfate replaces the nitrate where nitrate would interfere, and the chloride and the powder are materials rather than reagents.

Pack prices follow the live silver spot price (the silver content of the pack at spot plus a fixed pack fee) and are shown in EUR excluding VAT. Silver nitrate (UN1493, oxidiser) and silver oxide (UN1479, oxidiser) ship as dangerous goods; the other silver compounds travel by standard courier in our pack sizes. All silver compounds are light-sensitive to some degree and are supplied in amber or opaque containers; keep them closed and dark. Our guide to mirror silvering with silver nitrate works through the Brashear and Rochelle salt processes if that is what brought you here.

Which silver compound do I need?

  • Silver nitrate: the default for anything in water: titration, Tollens' reagent, nanoparticles, plating, silvering, making other silver salts.
  • Silver(I) oxide: a strong, insoluble base and oxidant for organic solvents: Koenigs–Knorr, Ag–NHC transfer, anion metathesis.
  • Silver carbonate: a milder insoluble base and halide scavenger: Fétizon oxidation, C–H activation, glycosylation.
  • Silver acetate: oxidant and acetate source for Pd-catalysed C–H activation; reactive silver inks.
  • Silver sulfate: the COD catalyst; nitrate-free silver for chloride removal and cyanide-free plating.
  • Silver chloride: Ag/AgCl electrodes, ion-selective membranes, infrared optics, photographic emulsions.
  • Silver powder: conductive pastes and adhesives, sintering, brazing and catalyst supports.
